In the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Feather River carved a rugged course through a remote, picturesque canyon. The steep walls of Northern California`s Feather River Canyon are forested in pine, fir, and madrone. Rich Bar, a lucrative mining settlement among the early California gold camps, is located along a serpentine channel of the East Branch of the Feather River.
Gold was first found at Rich Bar (located on the east branch of the Feather River`s north fork) in July 1850 by miners coming over mountains from the Yuba Diggins. All summer, more miners descended into Rich Bar, bought claims, and thrust their shovels into the earth, eager for wealth. In 1850, Rich Bar hosted more than 200 miners.
Remarkable gold strikes came regularly, and Rich Bar grew to a population of one thousand by summer`s end. In that first year, the value of Rich Bar`s gold was estimated between two to four million dollars, valued at $16 per ounce. From 1850 to 1890, the figure reached $9 million. Such figures placed the camp high in gold production per district.
Gold has been mined at Rich Bar continuously since that time. Rich Bar Gold is very close to pure. Typically it will assay at .995 fine.
